Originally established by General George Washington on August 7, 1782, as the Badge of Military Merit, the award was revived in 1932 as the Purple Heart to recognize members of the United States Armed Forces who were wounded or made the ultimate sacrifice while serving in combat.![]()

The Purple Heart is more than a medal—it is a lasting symbol of extraordinary courage, sacrifice, and unwavering devotion to our country. Behind every Purple Heart recipient is a story of resilience, selfless service, and a commitment to protecting the freedoms we enjoy every day.![]()

On Saturday, July 25, 2026, Spectracare Foundation was honored to return to Forgotten Angels Equine Rescue in Medford, New Jersey, for another inspiring Equine Therapy session with our veterans Bill Turner, Michele Farren, Tom MacPherson, and Lauren DelRicci accompanied by our dedicated volunteers Kathleen Van Stine and Alberta Amici.![]()

Our Veterans Equine Therapy Program is guided by two compassionate, licensed therapists, Micke Stafford and MaryAnn Brewer, who provide a safe and supportive environment for veterans throughout their healing journey. MaryAnn Brewer is a certified Eagala Specialist, utilizing the internationally recognized Eagala Model of equine-assisted psychotherapy. This evidence-based approach allows veterans to work alongside horses from the ground—without riding—to build trust, develop healthy coping skills, strengthen relationships, and process difficult emotions in a unique and meaningful way.![]()

Equine Therapy is far more than spending time with horses—it is a journey of healing, trust, and emotional connection. Many veterans living with Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) find that horses have a remarkable ability to sense emotions without judgment. Through grooming, leading, observing, and interacting with these gentle animals, veterans often experience reduced anxiety, improved emotional regulation, greater self-confidence, and a renewed sense of purpose.![]()

The experience is equally transformative for the horses. Many of the horses at Forgotten Angels Equine Rescue have themselves been rescued from abuse, neglect, or abandonment. As they learn to trust people again, they form incredible bonds with the veterans. It is a powerful reminder that healing is not one-sided—both the horses and the veterans are given an opportunity to overcome past trauma and move forward together.![]()

This unique partnership demonstrates that healing does not always come through words. Sometimes it comes through patience, compassion, and the quiet understanding shared between a veteran and a horse.![]()
